RECAP: LONDON FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY, FOOD STYLING AND REEL CREATION WORKSHOP

As food photographers, food bloggers and food content creators we have to face facts - the social media landscape is changing and with it, how we share content! Where once ‘only’ good photos and delicious recipes were needed to get noticed, we now need to know how to capture great photos, write stellar recipes and film drool-worthy video content - especially short form video content (think TikTok and Instagram Reels) - to ensure we stand out from the crowd!

But creating engaging short form videos, especially at scale and particularly in the food space where lip syncing just won’t do, can feel overwhelming, am I right?! That’s why Silvia and I came up with the idea for the March 2023 London food photography, food styling and reel creation workshop; what if we could share how we’re managing to meet our clients’ food content needs whilst still producing work that’s visually engaging, on trend and achievable!

With that in mind, Silvia and I taught two action packed days all about food content creation, short form video, creativity and styling at Silvia’s gorgeous London home studio. You can find some outtakes from the days below…..

DAY 1 - LONDON FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY, FOOD STYLING AND REEL CREATION WORKSHOP TIMETABLE

Silvia and I wanted to give our incredible students the chance to…

  • learn the foundation of videography - what are frames per second, why does it matter, how do we manage camera shake, angles and so on

  • develop their creativity and explore hands on food styling theory - we discussed how to style those tricky salads and after a little demo, students had a chance to have a go themselves

  • understand how to create engaging, eye catching short form video - we practiced transitions and explored GIF creation

  • build a food photography portfolio with lots of varied images from dark and moody, to colourful and bright!

Day one was intense, but students were able to film, photograph and style 4 separate, complete Reels/TikToks whilst learning LOTS that they can apply when creating content at home. They finished day one feeling inspired and brimming with ideas!

DAY 2 - LONDON FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY, FOOD STYLING AND REEL CREATION WORKSHOP TIMETABLE

Building on the learning from day 1, Silvia and I wanted to ensure the students’ video and photography portfolio was versatile and interesting, whilst ensuring they had all they needed to kick butt after the workshop and step into their short form video creation with confidence, so we ensured that they…

  • had the opportunity to ask lots of questions during a morning Q&A

  • learned the ins and outs of editing content on their phone/tablet

  • understood key short form video trends

  • created a cinemagraphic recipe reel - we taught this focusing on dark, moody and romantic visual story telling

  • got to grips with editing in Premier Pro - students also received handouts and a screen recording so that they can revisit their learning at home.
